Dehraoud: On
the Road to Development
The
people of Afghanistan were previously quite familiar with
Dehraoud, one of the districts of Urozgan province, formerly
nominated as a model of development and agriculture in
Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during the war-time that
followed, Dehraoud district became one of the insecure
districts of Afghanistan. The people of Dehraoud district
were since facing problems on a daily basis: the schools
were destroyed, there was no health clinic, there was no
road access from one district to the next, there was no
access to clean drinking water.

Livelihood
Success Story
Since
April 2010, the National Area-Based Development Program
(NABDP) Community Empowerment team has established six
Livelihood groups at Shah Toot and Qala-e-Luqman of
Charasyab district and Qal-e-Omer Khan, Khowaja Musafer and
Dodamast villages of Paghman district. Of these six groups,
two are being trained in gardening techniques, one in
vegetable farming, two in poultry production and one in
dairy production. The capacity building training has been
completed and the professional training should conclude
within two months.

Peace
agreement in Mehmandara district, Nangarhar province

In July 2007, the
National Area-Based Development Programme (NABDP)
initiated project activities aimed at ensuring sustainable
rural development and promoting human security in the border
provinces of Afghanistan. Through support from the
Government of Japan, NABDP’s Border Stabilization Project (BSP)
reached Nangarhar province, one of seven targeted locations
in the country. The BSP launched a comprehensive set of
interventions to effectively address poverty and insecurity

Annual Flood
Damage Controlled
Spring
flooding is a major recurring problem across villages in
Afghanistan when rainfall and widespread melting of snow
cause the riverbanks to overflow and damage agricultural
lands and homes nearby. The community at Nawabad village of
Kunar Province had been part of this vulnerable group facing
the flood crisis every year. Approximately 150 families live
in this village who have tackled the problem through basic
techniques including regular patrolling and rapid evacuation
of homes.

Through
its National Area-Based Development Programme (NABDP), the
Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) is
constructing a 180 meters long bridge on Arghandab River in
the village of Chargholab in Kandahar province. It is one of
NABDP’s biggest infrastructure projects.

completed by MRRD’s National Area-Based Development Program

Since
late January 2008, MRRD’s National Area-Based Development
Program has established four District Development Assemblies
(DDAs) in Watapur, Chapa Dara, Asad Abad and Manogai
districts of Kunar Province, while the DDA members also
formulated District Development Plans.

 In
June 2008, the Economic Regeneration unit of NABDP signed
contracts with three Facilitating Partner NGOs to support
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in three provinces -
Balkh, Bamyan and Herat. One of these SMEs is a melon
enterprise in Balkh province, which is supported by the NGO
Hand in Hand (HIH). The entrepreneur, Mohammed Azam Afridi,
has been running his enterprise, 'Angaza', for several years
now. Angaza selects and buys Alkani melons from local
Afghan farmers and then packages and exports them to India.
The Alkani is a delicious, sweet-tasting.
