Success story

Hundreds and thousands of rural people in Afghanistan are not having access to hydropower

Herat - More than 60% of Herat population in rural or remote areas are yet to have electricity or such system that provides them light during the dark nights. They deprive from having today’s advanced electrical facilities, they have no access to a refrigerator, fan, stove, heater and even a television which is more common in public for hearing/seeing today’s information and current situation and learning many other important things from it, but they are yet to have one.

On the other hand UNDP, through its National Area-Based Development Program (NABDP), works with the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development to support and fund such community-driven projects. NABDP works closely with rural people and remote areas residents to form District Development Assemblies (DDAs) which identify community needs and priorities and devise community-oriented project plans.

Therefore based on one of the Poshta Zarghoon CDC official petition and request and through the collaboration and funding of government of Japan, NABDP built a Micro Hydro Power in Gaja village located in Poshta Zarghoon district with a total cost of 25,499.00 USD.
