25 villages connected with Farah main city

By the construction of 20 meter bridge 25 villages connected to
Farah
centre and provided access to the main market for
thousands of
residents in
AnarDara district of Farah province.
National
Area Based Development Program (NABDP/MRRD) spent $133,233 USD
to build the mentioned bridge, which benefited 4,389 people and
created 3,837 labor days. The project was funded by the
government of Norway.
Earlier the residents of those 25
villages faced with so many problems, they were paying rent of
trucks or tractors for their cars to cross the river. Also, it
was very difficult for farmers to supply their products to the
market on time, which now these problems has been removed by the
construction of this bridge. Consequently, it brought so many
changes in the life of the people of those villages, because now
they have easy access to schools, markets, hospitals, and etc.
which are available in the head quarter of the provincial.

National
Area Based Development Program (NABDP/MRRD) are constructing 31
Biogas plants with the total worth of $ 26,128 USD allocated
budget for 31 families which will benefits 217 individuals and
will create 836 labor days. The allocated budget is funded by
European Commission (EC) through NABDP/MRRD.
By the
completion of these projects, positive changes will come in the
living conditions of these three villages (Kaltak Neyazi, Khan
Qala and Ali Khan Khil Pul Jogi) of Mehtherlam, because the
villagers economic situation is very weak and as most of these
people are busy with agriculture and livestock and fuel and gas
costs are increasing day by day and the people are unable to get
it.
A resident of
Kaltak Neyazi village Haji Noor Mohammad said that” last winter
we had many problems with cold weather, all my family members
got chest infection and flue, I spent around one lack (A hundred
thousand) Afs only for the treatment of my family members as my

National Area-Based
Development Programme (NABDP) facilitated vocational training
for women in Helmand Province
NABDP
implemented an income generation projects (embroidery and
literacy) for the unemployed women at Jadaye Mirdawood village,
Nahr-I-Saraj district of Helmand Province with the total cost of
$ 34,418 USD allocated budget which created 1,101 labour days
and benefited 4,130 individuals, funded by European Union (EU).
The project
lasted for 6 months with participation of 20 women. Since most
of the province women are illiterate and the tradition and
cultural issues does not allow them to go outside of the house
to work, therefore implementation of such projects are essential
throughout the province

Hydro supplier and manufacturer

MRRD/NABDP/ERDA
organized 2 days workshop with the qualified micro hydro
supplier/manufacturer across the country from 1-2 May, 2012.
The
electro-mechanical equipments with its equipment, installation
and after sales services are being provided through these
suppliers and manufacturers
The workshop
was attended by 44 participants representing 35 workshops across
the country.
The major
objectives of the workshop were,
• To initiate
interaction program with the perspective manufacturer to discuss
MHP promotion in the country.
• To share
experiences of MHP promotion in the country and identify major
problems and possible solutions.
• To identify
capacity development needs of the private sectors to provide
reliable and quality services.


Save water, secure the future
National
Area Based Development Program (NABDP/MRRD) are installing 172
hand pumps in Zabul province in water and sanitation sector to
provide safe drinking water with the total worth of $233,595 USD
allocated budget which created 7,474 labor days and benefited
28,033 individuals in different villages and districts of Zabul
province, which are funded by the European Commission through
NABDP/MRRD.
All of these projects were
requested by the District Development Assemblies (DDAs) in the
province from NABDP/MRRD and meanwhile the projects were
implemented by the same DDAs which were the great needs of the
villagers in the area.
Haji Gul Agha, A 50 year’s old
villagers of Kalat center, Zabul province, his daughter was died
in a car accident while passing the road for bringing water from
the pond of raining water present on the other side of
Kabul-Kandahar high way. He said that “I am a poor person having
13 family members in my house, all of my children are small and
underage and am working at a hotel fare away from my house
located on the Kabul-Kandahar high way and am daily going there
and while my family needs drinking water so my small child are
going to that dangerous place and as in result last year while
my small daughter Jamila was bringing water from other side of
that dangerous high way she passed away by traffic accident”.

Success story
Hundreds and thousands of rural people in Afghanistan are not
having access to hydropower
Herat
- More than 60% of Herat population in rural or remote areas are
yet to have electricity or such system that provides them light
during the dark nights. They deprive from having today’s
advanced electrical facilities, they have no access to a
refrigerator, fan, stove, heater and even a television which is
more common in public for hearing/seeing today’s information and
current situation and learning many other important things from
it, but they are yet to have one.
On the other hand UNDP, through
its National Area-Based Development Program (NABDP), works with
the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development to support
and fund such community-driven projects. NABDP works closely
with rural people and remote areas residents to form District
Development Assemblies (DDAs) which identify community needs and
priorities and devise community-oriented project plans.
Therefore
based on one of the Poshta Zarghoon CDC official petition and
request and through the collaboration and funding of government
of Japan, NABDP built a Micro Hydro Power in Gaja village
located in Poshta Zarghoon district with a total cost of
25,499.00 USD.

Urozgan

the danger of flood in Urozgan province.

protection wall in two villages (Baidak and TangaiSurkh) of
Urozgan province with the worth of $213,730 USD allocated
budget, funded by Dutch government through NABDP/MRRD, which
created 6,932 labor days and benefited 25,994 individuals.
Prior to the implementation of
these projects, the villagers were suffering from floods which
were causing many economical problems and the floods have
destroyed their agricultural forms and houses. Thus, the people
of these villages has come together and requested NABDP/MRRD for
the construction of the protection wall. As rural development is
NABDP goal, so it has implemented that protection wall project
in the villages which made the villagers so much happy and
appreciate the hard work and development projects of NABDP.

Success story
Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army
National
Area Based Development Program (NABDP/MRRD) constructed a school
building with the worth of $91,007 USD allocated budget, funded
by Japan government through NABDP in faraway DorBaba district,
Chinar village of Nangarhar province. This project created 2,912
labor days and benefited 10,921 individuals.
This village is located at
faraway mountainous area of Nangarhar province, where the
village does not have agricultural lands and most of the
villagers are busy with daily retail business activities, like
selling some things in bazaar or busy in daily labour working,
this project was the first basic project which they were eagerly
been waiting for school where their sons and daughter get
education
Prior to the constructions of the
school, students were sitting under the shade of trees in the
open ground, and in rainy season the students were unable to
attend the classes and on the sunny days the burning sun shine
were also disturbing the students. This school is facilitating
the best opportunities for children and youth with the 16 best
classroom studying

The
National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP/MRRD) organized
a three day IT workshop for IT staff
The
Information Technology (IT) training workshop aimed to motivate
the NABDP IT local focal points in Regional/Provincial
offices across Afghanistan on batter using of ICT system and
provide a platform for gathering and exchanging knowledge,
ideas, and technical skills. The training included ICT system
equipment and features.
NABDP HQ IT
staff led the training and guided the IT focal points in
developing a productive IT system for their offices. The IT
focal points will play a significant role in providing network
accessibility within their offices and sharing their IT skills
with local staff.

On 10th, April
2012 , the first Programme Board Meeting National Area Based
Development Program for year 2012held in the MRRD Compound.
H.E. Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak and , Muhammad Tariq Ismati
Acting Deputy Minister – Programs of the Ministry of Rural
Rehabilitation and Development , UNDP Country Director Alvaro
Rodriquez and representatives of the Donor Community
participated .
H.E. Minister
Barmak has opened the meeting and warmly welcomed the delegates
from different countries and expressed that he will go through
audit of all the previous performances to move forward with a
transparent and clear vision, no tolerance for corruption and
acts against policy and Stream line the policies, set the
standards for management and precious results, coordinate and
intervene with other ministries, Innovate for new fundamental
principles and set benchmarks for one , 5 and 10 years to
reduce poverty in rural areas.
H. E. Minister asked the
respective donors to continue their support to the program to
the end of 2014 and afterward, where the donors agreed and
mentioned their commitment with the program.
Mr. Alvaro
Rodriquez UNDP country director said that we want to improve the
quantity, quality of the NABDP outputs and outcomes. Also he
added that we build the network between the program strengthen
coordination and partnership with other programs of MRRD.
Over three
hours, participants discussed importance and related issues to
run the National Area-Based Development Programme (NABDP) – the
joint initiative of MRRD and UNDP productively, which is
currently in its third Phase (2009-2014).
NABDP
presented 2011 progress update that, it has made on the program
overall, achievments reporting, evaluation plan, organizational
structure. Donors had the opportunity to comment and discuss
progress and program direction.

New UNDP Country Director visits MRRD’s Minister and NABDP Staff
Honorable Alvaro Rodriguez has
newly arrived as the Country Director of the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Afghanistan,
replacing Manoj Basnet. Rodriguez is visiting the major projects
of UNDP and made his stop at the National Area-Based Development
Program (NABDP) at the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and
Development’s (MRRD) compound on the afternoon of 24 March 2012.
Rodriguez, originally from Chile,
has worked for UNDP for over 20 years in Somalia, Pakistan,
Kenya, China, Thailand, and USA, among other nations. As Country
Director in Somalia and Pakistan, he comes to the position with
knowledge of the region and operating in complex environments.
H.E. Wais Ahmad Barmak, Minster
of MRRD, and NABDP’s Senior Management Team warmly welcomed
Rodriguez and congratulated him on his new position in
Afghanistan. Barmak and Rodriguez started with a private
meeting, followed by a larger reception with NABDP staff.
Newly appointed as well, Barmak
ensured Rodriguez that MRRD is committed to bringing significant
positive changes to the ministry in the near future. As one of
MRRD’s largest and most flexible programmes, MRRD is
concentrating efforts on NABDP and appreciates UNDP’s long term
support in this regards.
NABDP Project Manager, Mr. Zahid
Hamdard, also welcomed Rodriguez and presented the achievements
of NABDP, while the heads of NABDP’s units introduced
themselves.
Rodriguez gave his compliments to
Barmak and NABDP’s staff, and expressed that UNDP will continue
its assistance with NABDP for the rural development of
Afghanistan. He appreciated the hard work and strong commitment
of the nearly all-Afghan staff in assisting in the development
of their country and looks forward to working here in the coming
years.

Construction of protection walls in Urozgan

Local Institutional Development Department (LIDD) completed a
Vocational Training project with the worth of $15,000 allocated
budget in Samangan province. This capacity building project
created 40 labor days with 280 beneficiaries. This training
started on 1st of august 2011 and ended on 1st January 2012 and
funded by the people of Japan.
One member of this training
declare her felling to NABDP about this project and said that “I
am Nasima one of the apprentice in this project in Dare Zindan
village. I am widow and my husband died 10 years ago. And now I
am working in livelihood project and we learn a new skill (food
processing).we learns how can make type of jams and pickles.

opportunities which created 2,737 Labor days and 10,264 people

Villagers of Baghipol said that”
before the construction of this bridge, people were spending
hours to go to other villages through passing the river, and a
small wooden bridge was present, which was only for people who
can pass it by feet, and their vehicles were unable to pass it.
Many of villagers children have fallen down to this river while
passing the river. But now by the construction of this bridge
many problems of these villagers are solved.”

project with worth of $50,576 USD allocated budget funded by
United Nation Development Program (UNDP) in Kunar province, the
construction of this protection wall created 1,457 labor days,
and many of these villagers were employed in this project and
5,462 people are benefited.
This 135 jireebs lands were under
the danger of flood and formers were unable to cultivate in
these lands because each year when they were growing in this
lands, the floods were destroying their farm back, and creating
many harms for them and casing their economical problems.

Area Based Development Programme (NABDP/MRRD) completed four
irrigation projects (two protection walls and two canals) with
the worth of $224,516 USD allocated budget, The construction of
these projects aims to bring improvement in irrigation system of
these villages and increase the rural economy of the villagers
which is one of the priorities of NABDP/MRRD to reduce poverty
and increase rural economy, these projects created totally 6,466
labor days with 24,248 beneficiaries.
In the
construction of these projects, the local farmers were employed
which indeed was another income for their economy, the
construction of these projects renewed the old tradition of
working together ( Ashar) and farmers were motivated to
collectively work after that and will clean the canal each year
together.
